Official agencies have claimed that spoken and written Khmer have been distorted and moving away from the language’s original form, as such, the government and national institutions are working with national language experts to raise awareness of the problem and work on ways to standardise the language.

Drawing attention to the problem was the focus of a workshop yesterday on “Distortion of the Current Usage of the National Language” organised by the Department of Books and Reading of Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, with the participation of many language and literature experts, at which many challenges were presented as well as solutions.

Kim Pinon, secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said that the rise of globalisation and increasing use of communications technology places challenges on Khmer and has influenced the language’s use, which he claims can be seen in its misuse on logos, trademarks, banners and billboards.

An expert on the human rights situation in Cambodia has issued a 10-point agenda for the authorities which calls for opening up political space and paving the way for democratic reform.

UN Special Rapporteur Vitit Muntarbhorn announced the plan on Friday at the conclusion of an 11-day mission to the country.

Although Cambodia has achieved much internationally-recognised progress, and ratified most core human rights treaties, he noted that a “pervasive paradox” persists.

“Since 2017, when the main opposition party was disbanded unjustly by judicial order, the country has effectively been under single-party rule, with all seats of the National Assembly in the hands of that monopoly,” he said.

The National Council of Khmer Language (NCKL) has revised the Khmer National Dictionary and plans to publish it by the end of 2022, and the dictionary will include more than 7,000 new definitions that are not available in the current edition.

The Khmer dictionary in use today has been compiled since 1915 during the reign of King Sisowath by many Khmer and foreign literary scholars including Chuon Nath. This edition was published in 1967-1968.
