Despite renewed economic growth and progress on a number of social indicators in 2015, Vietnam’s record on civil and political rights remained dismal. The ruling Communist Party has a monopoly on political power and allows no challenge to its leadership. Basic rights, including freedoms of speech, opinion, press, association, and religion, are restricted. Rights activists and dissident bloggers face constant harassment and intimidation, including physical assault and imprisonment. Farmers continue to lose land to development projects without adequate compensation, and workers are not allowed to form independent unions.
Analysts suggested that the government was trying to keep the number of political arrests and trials to a minimum in 2015 because it faced scrutiny from the United States Congress as negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) neared completion. Even so, there were many notable instances of government persecution of critics.

Obama Should Press Leaders to End Repression

Washington, DC – United States President Barack Obama should ensure that human rights are a central focus in the upcoming summit of Southeast Asian leaders in the US, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to Obama. Obama is scheduled to host the leaders of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on February 15-16, 2016, at the Sunnylands estate in California.
Appeal for funds to help cover the costs of translating historical Khmer documents from French into Khmer language
In the work of translating documents on the transfer of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom territories to colonial Vietnam to continue colonizing her until now by colonial France that we researched and founded for more than 3,000 pages at Aix-En-Provence in France, now we have made an agreement with the translator that will span 20 months to complete, commencing on January 4, 2016.
Expenditures are as followed: – Per month for one translator: $600 – Per month for two employees: $200 x 2 = $400 – Per month for miscellaneous expenses: $200
Total expenses per month: $1,200 (One thousand two hundred)
These historical documents, after 200 pages had been translated, we will publish and share with free of charge with you and our compatriots. For expenditures on translating these documents, KKC and KYAD (The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Community and Khmer Youth Alliance for Democracy) have hope on you and compatriots for your participation in making your financial contributions in accordance to your charity and conscience.
